AC Interclub

Four teams entered the event this year. After 3 rounds Warkworth CC and Orewa CC were tied with 2 wins and a draw.

In the match between Warkworth and Orewa, Warkworth actually beat Orewa on hoop points but as the competition is based on matches won or drawn, the decision had to be made on the total numbers of games won. Orewa had won 13 and Warkworth 11, so Orewa were declared this year's winner and Warkworth runner up.

AC Men's Open Singles

The Auckland Men's AC Open was played this year for the first time in 3 years at Warkworth CC, on the 2nd March. Due to only having 4 entries the event was reduced to a one day event. The lawns were fast and the weather stunning. It was played as a block, with 3 rounds completed in the day.

Nelson Morrow (Warkworth) won all his games with Robert Lowe (Takapuna) runner up. Robert also completed a TP against Jim Wardle (Epsom/ Remuera) in the first round, while Nelson had a close game against Vincent Commarieu (Epsom/Remuera) winning +1. Click here for the photos.

GC Grades Championship

Premier & Senior Divisions. 17/18th November, 2018. Venue: Pakuranga CC.

Sunny skies and good paced lawns were the order of the day for the top two divisions of the Auckland GC Grades competition.

The Senior section had only 4 entries, so this event was played as a one day event, double round robin. The convincing winner was Gill Railey (Pt. Chevalier) who won all her 6 games. Runner up was Jack Yates (Carlton) on 3/6 wins.

The Premier section had 8 entries with players from 6 different clubs. This was played over two days with everyone playing each other twice. At the end of the first day Rod Templeman (North Shore) & the manager, Nelson Morrow (Warkworth) were tied on 6/7 wins. Scott Martins (Pukekohe) caused upsets on the sunday beating both Rod and Nelson, but Nelson managed to win all the rest of his games and was declared winner on 12/14 with Rod runner up, on 10/14.

Auckland Croquet were very grateful to Pakuranga for agreeing to host this event when North Shore was unable to due to the condition of their lawns.

Auckland AC Open Doubles and Singles

Played at Carlton CC 2nd/4th November.

The doubles and singles were joined together this year, which proved successful as we had 4 pairs competing for the doubles title, the first time this has happened in many years.

The doubles were played on the friday, as an all play all block. The top three pairs of Nelson Morrow & Malcolm Cawley (Auckland) , Robert Lowe (Auckland) and Peter Filbee (South Taranaki )and Pam Fisher (Waikato) and Roger Adamson ( Counties Manukau) finished the day with 2 wins each. On count back Nelson & Malcolm took the title with Robert & Peter runners up.

The singles was played on saturday and sunday with all the doubles competitors , plus 4 additional players.

This was played as two blocks , with 5 games in each block and a final between the winners of each block.

The blocks produced some surprising results, one being Jacqui Anderson beating Pam Fisher and another, Pam Fisher beating Robert Lowe. The two finalists after a count back on net points were Robert Lowe (Takapuna) and Keith Ebden ( Bay of Plenty).

The final started well for Robert getting to peg and 4 back before Keith eventually hit in. Keith then played a tight game with few errors and managed to edge out Robert 22-21 on time.

The manager Nelson Morrow thanked Carlton for their well prepared lawns and wonderful catering and assistant manager , Hilary Salmons presented the Cups and Auckland Certificates to the doubles and singles winners.
